More than one user on your PC?

If   there   are   several   different   people   who use     your     PC     under     the     same     login account     name,     Tappy     will     not     work properly. This    is    simply    because    it    doesn’t    know which    of    you    is    typing    at    any    point    in time, so the results will be meaningless. In     this     situation,     to     solve     this,     we recommend    that   you    set    up    a    separate Windows   login   for   each   user   e.g.   ‘Fred’ and     ‘Mai-Lee’,     and     use     the     Windows ‘Switch   user’   function   when   each   of   you uses   the   PC.   Then,   if   Tappy   was   installed on   the   ‘Fred’   account,   it   won’t   be   running when ‘Mai-Lee is logged on.

Tappy

The research application is called ‘Tappy’. It runs on any Windows PC or laptop (not Mac’s, tablets or smartphones at this stage) and you can  download it from here. Once you have downloaded Tappy, just install it the same as any other Windows application. You can subsequently withdraw from the project at any stage, simply by un-installing Tappy. If you have any questions, first look at the FAQ page. If you cannot find the answer there, please contact us.

Your details

When    you    start    Tappy    for    the    first time, it asks for some details - Your      email      address,     This      is      a research   project   and   we   may   need to   contact   you   about   problems   with the   data   (unlikely)   or   let   you   know about    the    results    of    the    study    or about   new   versions   of   Tappy   (more likely).    Tappy     also     asks     for    your name     –     if    you     prefer     to     use     a pseudonym   instead,   that   is   fine   by us. Note    that    your    email    address    and name    are    NOT    stored    with    your keystroke   data,   which   is   completely anonymous. Your   year   of   birth   -   we   really   need this,    to    segment    the    data    into    age ranges. Whether    or    not    you    have    already been     diagnosed     with     Parkinson’s Disease   and,   if   so,   some   details   of   its effect   on   you   and   what   medications you    may    be    taking.    Please    be    as accurate     as     you     can     with     these details.

What data is captured

There      is      no      personally      identifiable information   captured   by   Tappy,   nor   any information     about     which     applications you     use,     passwords     or     any     numeric information at all. Tappy      gathers      the      finger      response character istics   when   you   tap   various   keys and   this   includes   left   or   right   hand   and the    section    of    the    keyboard,    but    not which individual characters. All        data        gathered        is        completely anonymized   and   it   will   only   be   used   by the   researchers   directly   working   on   this project   and   never   disclosed   to   any   third party. Most   people   have   heard   about   spyware that   steals   your   personal   information.   As explained    above,    Tappy    does    not    know the   individual   characters   that   you   typed and   you   can   also   view   your   actual   data   at any   time   from   the   Tappy   ‘Show   my   data’ menu. Ultimately           your           guarantee           of confidentiality   is   that we   are   conduct ing   a supervised,   university- approved   res earch project     into     Parkinson’s     Disease.     The credibility     of     this     project     would     be immediately   trashed   if   we   acted   less   than 100% ethically in all facets of the project.
